Carey, I agree that economic decisions include intangible things as well as those that are quantifiable.  I think we disagree about the level at which these decisions should be made.  I take it you think that Government should structure markets with rules and or incentives that will limit people’s decisions to what some wise person or committee decides are the correct decisions.   I can agree with a certain amount of this, I'm ok with environmental standards that keep rivers from catching on fire.  The cost/benefit ratio is very acceptable where the damage is obvious and the cost to fix it reasonable   I cannot agree with a Carbon Tax that would seriously reduce our productivity and standard of living in the name of preventing climate change.  The danger is hypothetical, the prescription may not make any difference, and the costs are clearly high.  Jerome, That is an excellent point.  I was looking at it from a cash flow standpoint.
Comparing it to buying an old Toyota truck that gets 25 mpg would be a better comparison.  Assuming a similar purchase price, it will still be 5 to 8 cents per mile more expensive than the EV.  Add to that the much lower repair costs and I still thing it’s a good ROI, given my driving needs.  I am keeping my big truck, I need it for hauling cattle and hay, but 98% of my driving doesn't require that kind of power, thus the EV truck.  Rob, Ok,  I get your point.  Hopefully the next few years will bring some plug in hybrids that may be more attractive to the general public.  Joby
