[ausev] Best device for a AC/DC generator

It is a good question. Here is the theory: I am looking at some awd
mini vans and wanting to do a form of simple hybrid conversion. I
would like to install a motor to power the rear wheels and leave the
gas motor to power the front although I would like (this is one of the
difficult parts) if cruising at highway speeds when the engine has
surplus power, to use the drive shaft to turn the motor in the rear
and generate electricity to recharge the batteries. By doing this I
would only be adding the additional weight of the motor and batteries
to the car and not the additional weight of a generator. That is the
theory.

Another benefit of doing things this way is that the rear wheels of an
awd minivan have a drive shaft and u-joints to the rear axle. It
looks like it will be much easier (read cheap) to install a motor
between the drive shaft and the rear axle - no massive adapter needed
as you would between the motor and transmission.

That is what is kicking around in the gray matter.
