The type of batteries does not determine the range but the total energy storage capacity does.  The zilla controller is overkill for a commuter but will give better hill climbing and acceleration.  Try to get your range to 60+ miles because lead acid and Ni-mh batteries last a lot more cycles if they are not run down all the way.  It will cost you less for batteries in the long run.  Probably a few hundred ycles dicharging them 80 percent and probably over a thousand discharging them 50 percent.  I killed a set of Optima Yellow top batteries with one almost 100 percent discharge and not being able to charge them until the next morning.
