[ausev] Motor greasing Re: Festiva EV conversion - acceleration & top speed

You can over heat a motor pretty easily.  If you do heavy amp draws and never get up to higher RPMs (which is where the blades of the motor move the most amount of air), then there isn't enough air movement to have it keeps its self cool.  You can add on additional cooling and forced air if that is the scenarios that are typical for this motor usage. You can see pictures of bands around the bigger motors with a flange on it to connect a forced air system.  Some times you won't know what RPMs would be normal until you start using it but then you just have to watch the temp on the motor until you know for sure.

But if I was to guess, the motor might have gotten a little too hot a few times and the seals on the bearings went out.  But I don't know how to verify that, might have to take it to the shop to find that out.

I agree with Jared, the motor in the link you sent looks like it has sealed bearings. if it has a squeal it is likely a bearing is going out. Take a temp reading when it
starts to squeal, chances are it is above the design spec not listed in the link. This motor is totally open fan cooled, it uses the surrounding air to remove the heat to keep it cool. Find a way to vent cooler air to keep the temp down if you want to extend the life of the motor and bearings. . Totally open motors are designed to run in a very clean environmet.

Larger more rugged design motors TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) usually have grease ports.

Steven -

How do you recommend greasing a motor?  This Mars DC motor has developed a squeak that gets louder with temperature.  It's periodic and increases with speed (I've definitively isolated it to the motor, it's not the wheels, speedo etc).

*Electric Motors do not need breaking in. * Grease them properly and operate
at the designed temperature and you will not have a problem.
